Picture This at the Philadelphia Museum of Art featured the work of four contemporary photographers: Gauri Gill, Sunil Gupta, Max Pinckers, and Pamela Singh. “Diverse in nationality and place of residence, each of these artists brings a cosmopolitan perspective to his or her work. Whether photographing in rural Rajasthan or major cities like Mumbai or New York, they offer points of view that do not fit easily into categories of ‘insider’ or ‘outsider.’ ”

The Delhi Photo Festival 2015 (October 30 – November 8) will feature the exhibition Transitions and Trajectories: Photographs by Bhupendra Karia in conjunction with Apparoa Galleries at The Lodhi, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. The exhibition which has been mounted in Mumbai and Jodhpur will now be on display at the Lodhi until 15 December 2015.

On October 3rd, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew projected photo-animations of The Virtual Immigrant in the Chen Crystal Court at the Royal Ontario Museum as part of the 10th Annual Scotiabank Nuit Blanche Toronto 2015. Nuit Blanche is a sunset-to-sunrise-all-night contemporary art event. Over 11,000 people viewed the projections.
sepiaEYE photographer Raghubir Singh is mentioned by Amin Jaffer, Director of Asian Art as Christie’s, as one of the artists to “be watched out for” in regards to the growing market for Indian artwork, namely photography. Read the article here. (Link)

Matthew’s An Indian from India series as well as her video installation, Open Wound and works from Sundaram’s Re-Take of Amrita and an installation of Indira’s Piano were on view alongside works by Gauri Gill, Jitish Kallat, Pushpamala N., Raqs Media Collective are on view.

Sunil Gupta’s body of work, “Pretended” Family Relationships is included in Capricious Magazine Issue No. 16: “EX.” Initiated in 2004 as a photography journal, each edition of the publication focuses on a theme. “EX” refers to the broad concept of exes: former or disguised selves, peoples, and places. Bakirathi Mani, Associate Professor of English Literature at Swarthmore College, wrote an essay for the Journal of Asian American Studies. “Beyond Bollywood: Exhibiting South Asian America” (Journal of Asian American Studies, 18.2 (2015): 192-217) is an analysis of the Smithsonian exhibition “Beyond Bollywood,” and features a key reading of Annu’s work.
Charan Singh’s work is in “FRESHFACED + WILDEYED 2015,” The Photographer’s Gallery’s annual exhibition devoted to showcasing new voices in photography. The Guardian (Link) features a few of the works in the exhibition. His works from the series Kothis, Hijras, Giriyas and Others, India (2013) and a video piece, Do I Know You? has also been selected for Fotofest International’s “I Am A Camera.”
